Thousands Gather for the Funeral Prayer of Former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi
Kuala Lumpur, 15 April 2025 — Malaysia mourns the passing of its fifth Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who returned to the mercy of Allah at the age of 85. The beloved statesman, known for his soft-spoken nature and emphasis on Islam Hadhari, passed away peacefully in Kuala Lumpur.
In a heartfelt outpouring of love and respect, thousands of Malaysians, including national leaders, dignitaries, scholars, and ordinary citizens, gathered at Masjid Negara for his Solat Jenazah (funeral prayer). The sea of attendees overflowed the mosque compound as people from all walks of life came to honour the late leader, many describing their presence as both a duty and a gift to the deceased.
Among the many tributes paid, Islamic scholars reminded the public of a powerful and authentic hadeeth of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:
"Whoever attends the funeral until the prayer is offered will have one qirāṭ (reward), and whoever attends until the burial is done will have two qirāṭs."The Prophet was asked: “What are the two qirāṭs?” He replied: “Like two great mountains.”(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
This hadith emphasizes the immense spiritual reward for participating in the funeral rites of a fellow Muslim. Scholars highlighted that one of the best gifts we can offer the deceased is our du'a (supplication) and presence at the funeral prayer, as it is an act of collective intercession and respect.
The Imam, who led the funeral prayer, remarked, “Today we are not only witnessing the farewell of a national figure, but also seizing the opportunity to attain reward from Allah. Attending the funeral of a righteous man is a blessing for both the living and the dead.”
Tun Abdullah’s legacy as a humble and principled leader continues to resonate with Malaysians. As he is laid to rest, the overwhelming turnout at his funeral stands as a testimony to the love and honour he inspired in the hearts of the people.
May Allah forgive his shortcomings, grant him the highest place in Jannah, and reward all who attended with the promised qirāṭ of reward.
“Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return.” (Surah Al-Baqarah: 156)
