Animal Sacrifice/Udhiyyah/Qurbani – A Sacred Sacrifice of Love, Obedience, and Divine Fear
As the sun rises over the blessed days of Dhul-Hijjah, a sacred wave of devotion flows through the hearts of the Ummah. It is the season of Udhiyyah, the time when the echo of a father’s trembling submission and a son’s serene surrender once again fills the air. It is the time to reflect, to sacrifice, and to weep—out of love, obedience, and fear of Allah ﷻ.
🌿 A Story That Shook the Heavens
Long ago, Allah tested His Khalil, His friend, Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام, with a command that would shake any human soul:
“O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice you, so see what you think.”[Surah As-Saffat 37:102]
And what did the boy, Prophet Isma’il عليه السلام, reply?
“O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient.”[Surah As-Saffat 37:102]
This is not a tale. This is a living example of submission (Islam) at its most profound. The knife never cut—but the hearts were pierced forever. And from that day, Allah immortalized this legacy for us, commanding:
“So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].”[Surah Al-Kawthar 108:2]
🕊️ The Essence of Udhiyyah: Not the Blood, but the Taqwa
“It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is your piety that reaches Him.”[Surah Al-Hajj 22:37]
When the blood of the animal falls to the earth, its worth is not in flesh, but in the heart that offered it. It is a declaration that nothing—not wealth, not comfort, not even life—matters more than Allah.
🩸 The Day of Eid: The Day of Love and Tears
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“There is nothing more beloved to Allah on the Day of Sacrifice than the spilling of blood. It will come on the Day of Judgment with its horns, hair, and hooves. The blood is accepted by Allah before it falls to the ground. So, sacrifice with a cheerful heart.”(Tirmidhi)
And he ﷺ himself led by example:
“The Prophet ﷺ sacrificed two white rams speckled with black. He slaughtered them with his own hand, said Allahu Akbar, and placed his foot on their sides.”(Bukhari & Muslim)
Imagine this: the Prophet ﷺ, beloved by Allah, shedding tears of love as he sacrifices with his own hand, remembering Ibrahim عليه السلام, trembling in awe of His Lord.
🤲 The Forgotten Poor – Your Qurbani, Their Eid
The Prophet ﷺ would share his Udhiyyah:
“At the time of the Messenger of Allah, a man would sacrifice a sheep on behalf of himself and his household, and they would eat from it and give some to others.”(Ibn Majah, Tirmidhi)
Today, in forgotten corners of the world, children wait—not for toys—but for the meat of your sacrifice. A single morsel of your Qurbani could be their only meal for weeks. Will we deny them this joy? Will we forget our duty?
⚖️ A Warning for the Negligent
“Whoever can afford to offer a sacrifice but does not do so, let him not approach our place of prayer.”(Ibn Majah – Sahih)
These words are not from a scholar, but from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself. They burn like fire for those with means who ignore the sacred call.
❤️ Let the Knife Fall on Your Ego
This Eid, the question is not: What will I sacrifice?
The real question is: What part of my ego, my wealth, my self-love—am I willing to slaughter for Allah?
Let the knife fall not just on the animal—but on pride, greed, heedlessness, and sin. Let your tears cleanse your heart. Let your sacrifice ascend to the heavens.
🌌 Conclusion: Let Your Udhiyyah Rise to the Throne
Dear reader, this is not about meat. It’s not about ritual. This is about you—your heart, your submission, your fear of standing before Allah with nothing but empty hands and excuses.
Let your Udhiyyah be an act of love, a cry of repentance, and a prayer that shakes the Throne of the Most Merciful.
“Thus We have subjected [the animals] to you that you may be grateful.”[Surah Al-Hajj 22:36]
On this sacred occasion, let us weep—not for the loss—but for the gain. For a single drop of blood spilled with sincerity will weigh more on the scales than mountains of gold.

🕌 Rulings for Those Performing Udhiyyah (Qurbani)
When undertaking the noble act of Udhiyyah, certain rulings must be respected to ensure that the sacrifice is accepted by Allah ﷻ and performed in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
1. Who is Required to Offer Udhiyyah?
Udhiyyah is Wajib (obligatory according to some scholars, especially the Hanafi school) upon every:
-
Muslim
-
Adult (who has reached puberty)
-
Sane individual
-
Who possesses wealth equal to or exceeding the Nisab (the same minimum amount that makes Zakah obligatory) on the days of Eid.
If you have the means, do not neglect this duty.
"Whoever can afford to offer a sacrifice but does not do so, let him not come near our place of prayer."(Ibn Majah – Sahih)
2. Timing of the Sacrifice
-
The sacrifice must be done after the Eid prayer on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah and remains valid until sunset on the 13th (the Days of Tashreeq).
-
If done before the Eid prayer, the sacrifice is invalid and must be repeated.
“Whoever offers a sacrifice before the Eid prayer, it is just meat for his family, not an Udhiyyah.”(Bukhari, Muslim)
3. Prohibition of Cutting Hair and Nails
For the one intending to perform the Udhiyyah, it is prohibited to cut any hair or nails from the 1st of Dhul-Hijjah until the sacrifice is done.
The Prophet ﷺ said:“When the ten days [of Dhul-Hijjah] begin, and one of you intends to offer a sacrifice, let him not cut his hair or nails until he has slaughtered.”(Muslim)
This is a symbolic act—showing complete devotion and submission to Allah, withholding even the smallest comfort until your offering is complete.
4. The Animal and Its Conditions
-
Permissible animals: Camels, cows, goats, and sheep
-
Minimum age:
-
Sheep/goat: 1 year
-
Cow: 2 years
-
Camel: 5 years
-
-
Free from defects: The animal must not be:
-
Blind or one-eyed
-
Lame or crippled
-
Severely sick
-
Extremely thin or malnourished
-
“Four (types of animals) are not permissible for sacrifice: the one-eyed animal whose defect is obvious, the sick animal whose sickness is obvious, the lame animal whose limp is obvious, and the emaciated animal that has no marrow.”(Abu Dawood, Sahih)
5. How Many People Can Share?
-
One sheep/goat = for one person and his household
-
One cow/camel = may be shared by up to seven individuals
This is based on a Hadith:
“We used to offer sacrifice at al-Hudaybiyah with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: a camel for seven people and a cow for seven people.”(Muslim)
6. Distribution of the Meat
It is Sunnah to divide the meat into three parts:
-
One-third for your family
-
One-third for relatives and friends
-
One-third for the poor and needy
“So eat of them and feed the needy and the beggar.”(Surah Al-Hajj 22:36)
It is prohibited to sell any part of the Udhiyyah—meat, skin, or fat. Even the butcher’s wage should not be paid from it.
“Whoever sells the skin of his Udhiyyah, there is no Udhiyyah for him.”(Ahmad – Hasan)
