Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim Urges Global Religious Leaders to Uphold Truth, Justice, Human Dignity and Peace

Kuala Lumpur — At the Second International Summit of Religious Leaders 2025, Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim delivered a powerful keynote urging faith leaders from across the globe to rise above divisions and champion humanity, justice, and compassion in the face of global crises.

The summit brought together 1,500 leaders from over 54 countries, including representatives from Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and other traditions, under the theme “The Role of Religious Leaders in Resolving Conflicts.”

Anwar Ibrahim’s Call to Action

In his keynote, the Prime Minister reminded participants that religious leaders have a divinely ordained duty to stand for justice and truth. He quoted the Qur’an:

“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives…”
(Surah al-Nisā’ 4:135)

He stressed that silence in the face of oppression is not an option, especially when innocent lives — including children in Gaza and other conflict zones — are being lost daily.

Referring to the legacy of past religious leaders, Anwar drew parallels with the Qur’anic principle of rahmatan lil-‘ālamīn (mercy to all creation), embodied by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:

“And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.”
(Surah al-Anbiyā’ 21:107)

Faith as a Force for Peace

Anwar emphasized that true religious leadership is measured not by rhetoric but by service to humanity. He recalled the saying of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:

“The most beloved people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to the people.”
(al-Mu‘jam al-Awsaṭ, 6192, Hasan)

He added that compassion in Islam transcends ethnicity, borders, and political ideologies — a vision that must be shared by all faith traditions.

Addressing Global Crises

Speaking on the ongoing humanitarian tragedy in Gaza, Anwar declared that the international community must not remain silent:

“Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he is not able, then with his tongue; and if he is not able, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith.”
(Hadith, Sahih Muslim 49)

He stressed that Gaza is not just a political issue but a test of moral conscience for humanity at large.

Closing Reflection

PM Anwar concluded by urging religious leaders to embody the Qur’anic call:

“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.”
(Surah Āli-‘Imrān 3:103)

He affirmed Malaysia’s commitment to serve as a bridge for interfaith harmony, humanitarian cooperation, and the defense of universal values.
