KUALA LUMPUR – The recent state visit of President Xi Jinping to Malaysia in April 2025 marked a historic moment in the deepening bilateral ties between Malaysia and China. The visit reinforced the longstanding strategic partnership between the two nations, underpinned by mutual trust, respect, and a shared vision for regional peace and prosperity.

A Symbol of Growing Bilateral Ties

President Xi’s visit to Malaysia was met with a warm reception at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya, where Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, along with senior government officials, welcomed the Chinese President. This visit highlighted the strong and enduring relationship between the two countries, marked by cultural performances from Malaysian students and a Mandarin-language greeting, which further emphasized the lasting spirit of friendship between the peoples of both nations.

Memoranda of Understanding: Strengthening Collaboration in Key Sectors

During the visit, a significant milestone was achieved with the signing of 31 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between Malaysia and China, covering critical sectors such as education, technology, trade, and investment. Among the most notable agreements was one focused on literature and cultural exchange. Through a collaboration between the Institute of Translation and Books Malaysia (ITBM) and China’s National Press and Publication Administration, up to 100 literary works from both nations will be translated and published. This initiative aims to foster greater cross-cultural understanding and intellectual exchange between the two countries.

Additionally, President Xi highlighted the potential for enhanced cooperation in the field of rare earth elements. China has agreed to share its advanced rare earth processing technologies with Malaysia, allowing the country to shift from exporting raw materials to adding value through production, which will significantly benefit the Malaysian economy.

Royal Endorsement of Bilateral Relations

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim of Johor, in his remarks at the Istana Negara, expressed confidence in the continued strengthening of Malaysia-China relations. Sultan Ibrahim emphasized the need for deeper economic integration, particularly in supply chain collaboration, and the enhancement of regional connectivity. The Sultan highlighted Malaysia’s strategic position within Southeast Asia and its potential to attract Chinese investment through initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Moreover, the Sultan’s call for greater cultural exchanges, including the promotion of the Sultan Ibrahim Chair of Malay Studies at Beijing Foreign Studies University, underscores the importance of cultural diplomacy in fostering deeper ties between the two nations.

The signing of the MoUs and the ongoing discussions between President Xi and Prime Minister Anwar have set the stage for a new chapter in Malaysia-China relations.
